A wedding cash fund can involve three different services: the registry that displays the request, the company processing the payment and the bank receiving the withdrawal. Check the entire route before putting the link on your wedding website. A contribution marked on a registry does not always mean money has arrived.
Identify where each payment goes
Write down the payment options you intend to enable. For each one, record who processes the gift, where it first appears and how you move it to your bank. A card payment processed inside a registry can follow a different route from a gift sent through an outside payment app.
Joy's August 20, 2026 card-contribution guide says gifts processed through Stripe appear in the Joy Wallet. Contributions through Venmo, Cash App or PayPal go to the couple's account on those platforms instead. Cash or checks exchanged directly do not appear in the wallet balance. [1]
This matters when comparing totals. If your registry lists $800 across several payment methods, do not expect a single $800 balance in one place. Keep a gift ledger with the guest, amount, method, transaction date, receiving account and thank-you status. Record a reservation separately from a completed payment.
Read both ends of the fee schedule
The figures below were checked October 27, 2026. They illustrate particular payment routes for a U.S. couple; they are not a promise that every country, currency or account configuration has the same charges.
Zola's guest help page lists a 2.5% handling fee for contributions paid by credit card through Zola. Its Venmo option has no fee when the sender uses a Venmo balance, bank account or debit card; paying through Venmo with a credit card incurs Venmo's 3% fee. [2]
Zola lets couples choose who covers the card-processing fee. Its stated default is for the guest to pay, with the handling fee added at checkout. [3] For a $100 gift under that default, a 2.5% fee adds $2.50 to the guest's payment. Check your saved setting before describing the cost to guests.
Joy's September 25, 2026 registry FAQ lists a 3.5% Stripe processing fee paid by the guest on top of a card contribution. Its card guide also lists a $1.70 fee each time the couple transfers a Stripe balance to a bank or debit card. Thus a guest contributing $100 at 3.5% pays $103.50; a separate $500 withdrawal leaves $498.30 after that transfer fee. [4] [1]
Include withdrawal frequency in your comparison. Ten transfers at $1.70 cost $17; one costs $1.70. That arithmetic does not establish how long you should hold the balance. Consider when you need the funds, account protections and the service's terms alongside the fee.
Check the payment app's own charges
A registry's absence of its own app-payment fee does not remove the payment app's charges. Joy explicitly directs users to those services' policies. [4] Read the fee screen for the funding method and withdrawal method you will actually use.
Venmo's current U.S. schedule lists no fee for sending to a Venmo account using a balance, bank or debit card, but 3% when using a credit card. Receiving a personal payment is free; a payment marked for goods and services has a different receiving fee. [5] These distinctions concern the transaction type, not the name you give the wedding fund.
Venmo lists standard bank withdrawals as free, typically taking one to three business days. Instant Transfer carries a 1.75% fee, with a 25-cent minimum and $25 maximum. [5] For a $1,000 eligible instant withdrawal, that percentage is $17.50. Decide whether speed is needed before choosing it by habit.
Verify the account before relying on the balance
Zola requires a U.S. checking account with a U.S. address for bank transfers and excludes international accounts and accounts in the listed U.S. unincorporated territories. Bank details must be added from the primary account. Its help page says a first cash transfer can take up to 10 business days, with subsequent transfers expected within two to four days. [6]
Zola also says additional identity verification may be required after transferring a significant amount, described as more than $1,000. [6] Complete requested steps inside the official account. Do not send identity documents in response to an unverified message claiming that a gift is waiting.
Joy's registry FAQ says Stripe transfers typically arrive within three to five business days and the Owner email is needed for the transfer capability. [4] Put the owner email and receiving bank into your private planning notes. Both partners should know which account holds the money and whom to contact if access fails.
If a honeymoon balance is due Monday, a withdrawal requested Friday is a poor funding plan. Business-day estimates also need room for verification, weekends and holidays. Set aside the payment from money already available rather than treating the registry total as a cleared bank balance.
Reconcile gifts before contacting a guest
Joy explains that an app contribution may be marked Reserved or Purchased even though the guest still needs to complete the transaction on the outside platform. [4] Check the linked receiving account, the payment method and any transaction reference before assuming a guest forgot to pay.
Keep screenshots or downloaded records privately. If a gift is missing, send support the registry reference, contribution date, amount and method. Ask which company can investigate that specific route. A registry may be unable to inspect a transaction made in an outside app.
When contacting a guest becomes necessary, describe the discrepancy without making a payment demand: “Thank you for your gift. Our registry shows a contribution through Venmo, but we cannot match it to our account. Would you check whether the payment completed and which username received it?”
Understand what protects a stored balance
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau cautions that payment-app balances differ in deposit-insurance eligibility. Some require an additional product or account activity. Its consumer guidance recommends promptly moving received money into an insured account rather than assuming that leaving it in an app provides the same protection. [7]
Venmo's disclosure describes conditional pass-through FDIC coverage for certain funds placed at program banks. It says that coverage protects against a program bank's failure, not PayPal's failure as the provider of Venmo. Other account funds may be uninsured. [5] Read the disclosure for your account rather than relying on a bank logo somewhere in the app.
Keep confirmation of a completed bank transfer. Compare the net deposit with the withdrawal amount and fee so a smaller deposit is explained in your ledger instead of becoming an unresolved discrepancy after the honeymoon.
Ask about returns before collecting gifts
Ask support how a cash contribution would be refunded if the wedding were canceled, a guest paid twice or the wrong amount arrived. Specify the payment route. Ask who starts the refund, whether processing fees are returned, whether a transferred balance must be restored and what time limits apply. Save the written answer.
Do not use the merchandise-return policy as your answer. Zola's return policy says a registrant returning an eligible physical gift receives Zola Stored Value, subject to applicable deductions; that value cannot be redeemed for cash or honeymoon funds. [8] A store-credit refund and a cash-fund withdrawal are different transactions.
Before closing a registry or changing its receiving account, reconcile outstanding payments and save the records needed for support. Keep any planned gift returns distinct from new honeymoon spending so the same money is not assigned twice.
