Lost U.S. Passport on Your Honeymoon: Replacement and Travel

Reporting, consular appointments, application papers and the limits of an emergency passport for onward travel.

A missing passport can change the rest of a honeymoon, especially when the next booking crosses another border. For a U.S. passport holder abroad, the immediate tasks are reporting the loss, contacting a U.S. embassy or consulate and checking which travel documents the remaining route will accept. A scan helps with the application; it does not become a replacement passport.

Report the physical document and keep the confirmation

The State Department advises reporting a valid U.S. passport lost or stolen immediately. Its online reporting service cancels the passport within one business day and sends a confirmation email. Reporting does not supply a replacement, and the canceled document cannot be used for international travel even if recovered. [1]

Record where you last had the passport and when you discovered it missing. Include the hotel, flight, train or transfer details that could help describe the circumstances. Save the reporting confirmation somewhere accessible to you if your phone is also missing.

The reporting service concerns the physical document. State says not to report an expired passport as lost or stolen, and distinguishes an exposed passport number from losing the actual passport. [1] If the problem is a disclosed number while the document remains in your possession, read that separate guidance before canceling it.

If a hotel or transport operator returns a passport you have already reported, tell consular staff. Do not try it at the airport because it looks undamaged. Keep the reporting and replacement steps connected.

Contact the consular post before changing flights

USAGov directs U.S. citizens outside the country to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for replacement instructions and timing. A limited-validity passport may be available when there is insufficient time for a regular one. [2] Use the official post's website for its appointment process and contact details.

Give staff your current location, a working contact method, the next departure and every connection. Say whether you need to return to the United States or continue to another country. A message that says only “flight tomorrow” leaves out the information needed to discuss the route.

State's overseas guidance requires an in-person application and warns that most posts cannot issue passports on weekends or holidays. After-hours duty officers can assist with emergencies, urgent travel or serious crime. [3] Treat that contact as a request for assistance, not a guaranteed weekend passport appointment.

Ask the airline about change options while you establish the appointment and document timetable. Before buying a replacement ticket, check whether you can reach the issuing post, obtain the document and satisfy the route's requirements. Save the airline's proposed itinerary so you can discuss the exact connections.

Gather what you have, then ask about anything missing

State's overseas checklist includes a passport photo, identification, evidence of U.S. citizenship, the travel itinerary, Form DS-11 and fees. Examples include a driver's license or expired passport for identification, and a birth certificate or photocopy of the missing passport for citizenship evidence. Consular staff will try to assist even if you cannot present every document. [3]

Make a list of what remains with you and what someone at home could retrieve. A phone image of the missing passport may be useful evidence for staff; do not describe it to an airline as a valid travel document. Ask the post how it wants copies supplied.

Current reporting guidance permits loss details within Form DS-11: explain where and when the passport disappeared and attach a police report if you filed one. If the information is incomplete, State may pause the application and request Form DS-64. [1] Follow the post's current directions rather than an old checklist that assumes the forms work identically in every case.

A police report is not mandatory under State's general overseas replacement guidance, though it can help document what happened. [3] Ask separately about any local police, immigration or insurance requirements. Keep a copy if you make a report.

Request a U.S.-size passport photograph

The printed U.S. passport photo size is 2 by 2 inches, or 51 by 51 millimeters. State requires one color photograph taken within the past six months, with a plain white or off-white background. Its instructions call for an original, unedited photo and prohibit filters or digital alterations. [4]

Show the photographer the official requirements. Do not assume that a shop's standard passport size matches the United States. Ask about printing and collection time before traveling across town, and check the post's instructions before relying on a photo service at the appointment.

Keep the photograph flat and protected with the application papers. Use your document checklist to avoid leaving the new photo at the hotel while taking the rest to the appointment.

Check the emergency passport against every border

State says emergency passports issued abroad have limited validity, generally one year or less. Some foreign destinations may not accept them. [5] Receiving one therefore does not establish that your original honeymoon itinerary can continue.

France is a specific example. State's current France guidance says the 12-page U.S. emergency passport is not valid for entry. It notes that transit through France may sometimes be permitted, but the decision depends on French authorities. [6] Do not turn that possible transit permission into an assurance that you can enter Paris for an overnight stop.

Review the document with the airline and the authorities for the destination and connections before rebooking. Explain that it is a U.S. emergency passport, give its expiration date and identify any overnight stop, airport change or separate ticket. Ask whether the route requires entering the transit country.

Also ask the consular post whether local departure formalities need attention after the original passport is lost. A replacement passport does not answer every question about a visa or entry record held in the missing document.

Keep the replacement instructions for after the trip

State directs travelers who received an emergency passport abroad to consult the letter supplied with it when replacing it with a full-validity passport. Within the first year, that letter identifies whether to use DS-11 in person or DS-5504 by mail. Fee treatment depends on eligibility; DS-5504-eligible replacements have no fee unless optional expedited service is requested. [5] Do not assume every emergency passport follows one exchange procedure.

Keep the letter with the passport and set a reminder well before the next international booking. For this honeymoon, maintain one list of the appointment, document collection, revised flights and accommodation changes. Share the practical tasks with your partner so both of you know which arrangements are confirmed.
